Guide: How to Season Your Titanium Camping Plate

Titanium Camp plates are an essential companion for back-country adventures, allowing you to reduce pack weight and experience more of the wilderness.

But seasoning this ultralight cookware is key if you want to use it to its full potential, enhance the durability, and create a non-stick surface.

Follow these steps to ensure your plate serves you well on every journey.

What You Will Need:

  • Titanium Camp Plate

  • Cooking oil with a high smoke point (e.g., avocado oil, sunflower oil, olive oil (unrefined), canola oil etc)

  • Paper towels

  • Oven, open flame, or gas camping stove

Step 1: Preparing Your Plate

Ensure your titanium camp plate is clean and free from any residue or oils. Wash it with mild soap and hot water, and let it dry completely before continuing.

Step 2: Applying the First Layer

Using a paper towel, apply a thin layer of cooking oil to the entire surface of the plate, including the sides.

Wipe off any excess oil to avoid drips and spills.

Step 3: Heat the Plate

  • For open flame: Place the plate directly over a campfire or suitable flame. Allow it to heat for about 5-10 minutes while adjusting to ensure the heat is evenly distributed.

  • For gas camping stove: Set up your gas camping stove. Place the oiled plate directly over the flame. Heat for 5-10 minutes while adjusting to ensure the heat is evenly distributed.

  • For home oven: Place oiled plate into oven and gradually heat to 200°c. Maintain heat for 30-60 minutes.

Note: Be cautious not to overheat; titanium transfers heat very efficiently. You want the plate to be very hot, but you don’t want to burn the oil by heating too quickly.

Step 4: Repeat the Process

After the initial seasoning, repeat the process 2-3 times. Each round will enhance the non-stick properties and durability of your plate.

Step 5: Regular Maintenance

After each use, clean your seasoned plate with a cloth or paper towel and a little bit of water.

To maintain the coating for longer, try to avoid harsh scouring pads or abrasive cleaners. Avoid using detergents if possible, as this will slowly remove the seasoning.

If you’re in the wild and unable to properly clean the plate, thats fine, just wash it as best as you can with water.

Tips:

  • Choose oils with high smoke points for a durable seasoning. We prefer avocado oil as it has a smoke point of around 270°c

  • Proper cleaning & maintenance contribute to a well-seasoned plate that will last you a lifetime.

There you have it, that’s everything you need to know to create a non-stick surface on your Titanium camping plate, making it the perfect partner for frying over an open flame, cooking on a gas stove, or any outdoor cooking adventure.
